Boy or Girl?

The week started with some interesting ideas. First I saw a report on how male Pigmy Hippopotamus tends to modulate the sperms so that less sperms with Y chromosomes are produced. Implying that males too can modulate the sex ratio of a population. (Nature Communications 28 Feb. 2012). Then I chanced across another report on cows. The amount of testosterone in follicular fluid influences the sex of the baby. (J. Exp. Zool. 303A:1120-1125, 2005). That is how females tend to control the sex ratio of the next generation. The hypothesis that females with low health status tend to give birth to female babies (the so-called Travers Hypothesis) now has a biochemical basis.
Of course the idiots who banned amniocentesis and is crying hoarse over sonographic examination of pregnant women will never hear about such findings. And if they do find, they will conveniently ignore it.

Amniocentesis is an invasive procedure. As a woman I would agree with the ban.
